Lieve in front of her booth Fountain Hills' Sister Cities agreement may include some art trading, and the Encaustic works of Kasterlee artist Lieve Goeman are a welcome addition to this weeks' Great Fair.
Last year Fountain Hills and Kasterlee, Belgium signed an agreement to become sister cities.
As a member of Kasterlee's Sister Cities Committe, Lieve learned of Fountain Hills' tradition with the November Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts as well as the Great Fair.
Lieve met Fountain Hills High School teacher Kathy David, who visited Lieve last summer.
As art teacher herself, Lieve was invited by David to give a demonstration to her class as well as check the November art show.
Interested in seeing the hunderds of artists display their work as well as fulfill David's wish to give a demonstration, she and her husband Adrien Govaert came to Fountain Hills.
"The students were very interested to see this special technique of applying the colored beeswax with a hot iron and creating a landscape or abstract work," Lieve said of Encaustic Art in an e-mail to the Times. "I let them try it and they figured out that it was very difficult."
Her experience at the Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts stimulated Lieve to apply for the Great Fair.
"The works were of very high quality, and so was the whole Fair in General," she said. "But Encaustic Art was not known by the artists. I supplied the requested formalities and was honored to be qualified to participate in the art in February."
As a young child growing up in the small village of Oudegem Lieve loved to draw and paint.
Since the age of 10, Lieve has participated in different art exhibitions and received her first award at the age of 17.
Lieve has received numerous awards since then for her oil painting, and after she got married in 1969 she went to art school for six years earning a degree in oil painting.
Several years ago she saw the Encaustic Art technique by visiting an art supplies exhibition and loved the technique right away.
"Most of my inspiration I get out of nature," Lieve said.
Because of her originality and the fine details in her work, Lieve gets many compliments as well as proposals from art galleries.
Her Encaustic Art is featured in the United Kingdom on the Web Site of Michael Bossom, who wrote several books about the technique.
